Zechariah and Elizabeth were relatives of Mary, so they were presented at the wedding ceremony of Joseph and Mary in Jerusalem.

The late-September of 6 B.C. of the old solar calendar of the Jews: Zechariah who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah was serving as priest before the God when his division was on duty. As the priests had the custom of the priesthood, they had to burn the incense in the Temple of the Lord. He drew lot, and the lot fell to him.

The crowd was praying outside when he was burning incense. Just then an angel Gabriel appeared to him standing at the right side of the altar of incense.

The angel said to him. (Luke 1:5-25).

“Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.”

Zechariah was troubled and he was gripped with fear, but he said to the angel Gabriel.

“How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is older than I.”

The angel Gabriel answered him.

“I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. Now you will be silent and unable to speak until the day this happen, because you did not believe my words which will come true at the proper time.”

When Gabriel disappeared Zechariah could not speak, so he came out, and he spoke by gestures to the people. Therefore, they perceive that he had seen a vision in the Temple.

Elizabeth got pregnant as prophesy and she conceived, and for five months she hid herself.
